The Linea Mini R pairs a 3-liter steam boiler with a separate 0.17-liter coffee boiler, so you can steam milk for several drinks in a row while the next shot brews. That steam boiler is almost twice the size of the one in the Linea Micra. The Mini R is the home version of La Marzocco’s Linea Classic: the group is fused to the coffee boiler, a rotary pump drives it, you start and stop each shot with a paddle, and a built-in shot timer shows the extraction time on the machine.
It is for a household that drinks a lot of milk drinks, or for anyone who wants to work the way a coffee bar works. It is also big and heavy: 36 cm wide, 54 cm deep and 30 kg. You choose the steam wand, Pro Touch or Cool Touch, and one of six colors.

Our baristas’ verdict
- Best at: milk drinks back to back. The steam boiler keeps up when you steam jug after jug, and the shot timer and the pump pressure you set from the outside make dialing in quicker.
- Right size for: a household that drinks several milk drinks a day and has a deep counter.
- Pick another model if: you make two or three drinks a day and space is tight (the Linea Micra has the same type of integrated group in a smaller body), or you want every shot to stop at a programmed volume, whoever brews (the GS3 AV).
- Plan for: 54 cm of counter depth, a 2.5-liter water tank to refill unless you add the optional plumbing kit, and a grinder budget next to the machine.
Strengths and weak points
Strengths
- Two boilers with PID temperature control (0.17 L coffee, 3 L steam): brew and steam at the same time.
- Integrated group: the group is fused to the coffee boiler, as on La Marzocco’s café machines, for a stable brew temperature.
- Built-in shot timer, so you read the extraction time without a phone or scale.
- Rotary pump, with pump pressure you adjust from the outside, without opening the machine.
- Two-valve pre-infusion with a self-cleaning flow restrictor; the pre-infusion time can be extended up to 99 seconds.
- La Marzocco Home app for temperatures and on/off schedules, and brew by weight with La Marzocco’s scale.
- Rinse mode, an automatic backflush program, an adjustable standby mode and barista lights over the work area.
Weak points
- Large and heavy: 36 × 54 × 38 cm (W × D × H), 30 kg.
- Runs from the 2.5-liter tank unless you add the optional plumbing kit, which is not in the box.
- No volumetric buttons: you stop the shot with the paddle, or let La Marzocco’s brew-by-weight scale stop it.
- High price point, and the Pro Touch version costs a little more in every color.
Options and how to combine them
- Steam wand: Pro Touch or Cool Touch. This is the only difference between the two versions. Both stay cool on the outside; the Pro Touch is the double-walled stainless steel wand La Marzocco first used on its café machines. PEEK polymer and stainless steel steam tips come in the box.
- Color: Black, White, Blue, Red, Yellow or Stainless steel, each with either steam wand.
- Water: the 2.5-liter tank, or La Marzocco’s optional plumbing kit. On a plumbed machine, a hybrid mode combines the classic pre-infusion with the newer phases.
- Grinder: a precise espresso grinder such as the La Marzocco Pico, or a larger flat burr grinder if you make many drinks a day.
- Brew by weight: the Mini R works with La Marzocco’s brew-by-weight scale, so the shot stops at the yield you set. The scale is not in the box.
- Included with the machine: an Easy Espresso Discovery Box and a place in a Home Barista Workshop at OR Academy.
How to combine them: choose the steam wand first, then the color; every color comes with either wand. Put the grinder budget next to the machine, because the grinder decides as much about the cup as the machine does. If you want to plumb the machine in, order the plumbing kit with it. Use the coffees in the Easy Espresso Discovery Box to dial in your Mini R, and practice your technique at the Home Barista Workshop.

Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between Pro Touch and Cool Touch?
Only the steam wand. Both stay cool on the outside; the Pro Touch is the double-walled stainless steel wand La Marzocco first used on its café machines. Boilers, group, pump and controls are the same on both versions.
Can I plumb in the Linea Mini R?
Yes, with La Marzocco’s optional plumbing kit, which is not in the box. Without it, the Mini R runs from its 2.5-liter water tank. Once plumbed in, the machine offers a hybrid mode that combines the classic pre-infusion with the newer phases.
How durable is the Linea Mini R?
La Marzocco gives no lifespan figure, so neither do we. What we can say: the group is built like the groups on La Marzocco’s café machines, the pump is a rotary pump, and our product page gives a warranty of 2 years.
How much maintenance does it need?
After knocking out the coffee puck, use rinse mode to flush the group. Backflush with the blind filter and the cleaning powder from the box; the machine also has an automatic backflush program.
Does it have a built-in grinder?
No. You need a separate espresso grinder, for example the La Marzocco Pico.
What power connection does it need?
The European version runs on 220–240 V single phase. La Marzocco gives a maximum of 1,770 W and 14 A at 220 V, and 2,100 W at 240 V.
Can I use it in a café?
La Marzocco sells the Linea Mini R as a home machine. For a café or restaurant, look at the Linea Classic S AV, which comes with 1, 2 or 3 groups.
Which start recipe do you recommend?
With the 17 g basket: 17 g of coffee in, 36 g of espresso out, in 27 to 32 seconds, coffee boiler at 93 °C, pre-infusion on. Grind finer if the shot runs faster than 25 seconds, coarser if it runs slower than 35 seconds.
