JURA X4 and X4c review: black coffee in volume

JURA X4 and X4c review: black coffee in volume

The JURA X4 is JURA's black-coffee machine for volume: up to 80 cups a day of espresso, coffee, café crème, lungo and americano, without a milk system to clean. It is the step up from the W4 when a team of black-coffee drinkers outgrows a 3 liter tank.

There are two versions. The JURA X4 runs from a 5 liter tank. The JURA X4c connects to the water supply and keeps a 2.8 liter tank for when it stands without a tap. The coffee side is the same; the choice is about water.

Our verdict

  • Best at: a production site, a warehouse office, a workshop or a coworking floor where people drink their coffee black, all day long.
  • Right size for: a team of about 20 to 25 people. JURA recommends the X line for up to 80 cups a day.
  • Pick something else if: people ask for cappuccino (the X10 and X10c have a milk system), or you pour well over 80 cups a day (the GIGA X3).
  • Plan for: emptying the grounds container, about 40 servings, at least twice on a full day.

X4 or X4c: the one choice to make

With a tap within reach, the X4c removes the most frequent chore at a busy black-coffee machine: carrying water. It connects to a 3/8 inch thread, and the fresh water kit is in the box. JURA notes that after a specialist has installed the connection, the X4c can still be disconnected and run from its 2.8 liter tank in manual mode.

Without a tap nearby, take the X4. Its 5 liter tank is lockable, as is the bean container. JURA also lists the Fresh water kit X line for the X4: once a specialist has installed it, it fills the tank automatically from the mains, and anyone can disconnect and reconnect it.

What it makes

JURA gives the X4 three brewing methods for black coffee. Espresso is brewed with the Pulse Extraction Process (P.E.P.), café crème with 3D brewing, and the One-Touch Lungo function makes long coffees in one go. Americano and hot water complete the menu; hot water has three temperature levels.

For each drink you set the water quantity, the coffee strength (10 levels) and the brewing temperature (3 levels). The spout adjusts from 65 to 153 mm, so a tall takeaway cup or a thermos mug fits under it, which matters on a site where people take their coffee back to work.

Grinder and settings

The P.A.G.2 grinder is fed from a 500 g bean container that extends to 1 kg with JURA's bean container extension. The brewing unit takes 5 to 16 g of coffee per cup. When we install an X4 or X4c, we set grind and strength with the first bag of our Houseblend, a full-bodied espresso blend with low acidity and notes of dark chocolate and cacao nibs, and adjust each drink before the team starts. If you go through a lot of coffee, the Houseblend subscription brings your beans every month; for an organic blend, our Close To Nature Blend is sweet, smooth and round, also to drink black.

A black-coffee machine shows a blend as it is: no milk to soften it. That makes the setup more important, not less, and it is why we spend the time on it at installation.

Living with it

No milk system means a short routine:

  • Empty the grounds container and the drip tray while the machine is switched on, so it registers that they are empty.
  • Top up the tank (X4 without the fresh water kit).

The grounds container holds about 40 servings, so at 80 cups a day it fills at least twice. The drip tray is monitored, and the rinsing, cleaning and descaling programs are built in; the display tells you when to run them. A CLARIS Pro Smart+ filter cartridge comes with both versions; the X4c also comes with 3-phase cleaning tablets, while for the X4 you order JURA cleaning tablets separately.

Payment and connectivity

Both versions support the MDB standard for payment systems. JURA lists Wi-Fi Connect V2, MDB Connect and Business Connect for the X4, and adds Payment Connect for the X4c, with Pocket Pilot 2.0 and 3.0 and the MDB Interface 2.0 for cashless payment and management. These are accessories, not standard equipment: tell us how people should pay and we include it in the quote.

How many people is it for?

JURA recommends the X line for up to 80 cups a day. At about 3.3 cups per person per working day, that is a team of around 24 people. If your team takes its coffee in two big waves (start of shift, lunch), look at the peak rather than the total. Above 80 cups a day, the GIGA X3 with two pumps is the next step.

When another JURA fits better

  • A small team or a narrow counter: the W4 makes the same three black coffees in a body 29.5 cm wide, for up to 50 cups a day. Read our JURA W4 review.
  • Milk drinks and cold brew: the X10 and X10c, same size and same daily output. Read our JURA X10 and X10c review.
  • More than 80 cups a day: the GIGA X3 and X3c, rated for up to 150 cups. Read our JURA GIGA X3 and X3c review.

Our comparison of the JURA W, X and GIGA series puts all lines side by side, and every model is in our JURA professional range.

Buying an X4 through OR Coffee

OR Coffee is listed by Bodart, the Belgian JURA importer, as an approved dealer for JURA professional machines. You can taste and try the X4 before you decide: at our roastery in Wetteren, or at your place. Once you order, we deliver and install the X4 or X4c, set it up with the 2 × 1 kg of Houseblend that comes with it, and do a tasting of our coffees with your team on site.

You can buy the machine outright, lease or rent it per month, or ask for a fixed price per cup that covers machine and coffee. Which option makes sense depends on how many cups you pour, so we work it out in the quote.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between the X4 and the X4c?

Water. The X4 runs from a 5 liter tank; the X4c connects to a tap with a 3/8 inch thread and keeps a 2.8 liter tank. Coffee, grinder and size are the same.

Can the X4 be connected to the water supply?

Yes, with JURA's Fresh water kit X line, an accessory that fills the tank automatically after a one-time installation by a specialist. The X4c has the kit in the box.

What do we need on site for the X4c?

A water tap with a 3/8 inch thread within reach, a power socket, and room to empty the grounds container and drip tray. Tell us what is there and we check the setup with you.

Can staff pay for a coffee?

Both versions are ready for it via MDB; JURA lists Pocket Pilot 2.0 and 3.0 and the MDB Interface 2.0. The payment hardware or software is a separate item in the quote.

Can we try it before we buy?

Yes. We set up a tasting and demo at our roastery in Wetteren, or we come to you.

Want a quote or a demo? Request one on the JURA X4 page or the JURA X4c page. Tell us roughly how many people drink coffee and whether there is a tap nearby, and we come back with the version and formula that fit. A tasting before you decide is possible at our roastery in Wetteren or at your place; delivery, installation and a tasting with your team come with the machine.

How we wrote this review

The demo, installation, setup and tasting describe how OR Coffee sells and delivers these machines. Our own measurements (cup temperature, noise, time per cup) will follow; we will add them here and mark them as ours. For daily and weekly care, see our JURA professional cleaning guide.
