JURA professional machines: cleaning, CLARIS filter and error codes

JURA professional machines: cleaning, CLARIS filter and error codes

A JURA professional machine needs a few minutes of care a day and a longer cleaning program when it asks for one. This guide sets out what to do daily, weekly and every few months, how the CLARIS filter and descaling fit together, and what the common messages and error codes mean. It covers the W, X and GIGA machines we sell; where a figure comes from one specific JURA manual, we say which.

Your machine's own instructions for use always come first. Everything below is taken from JURA's product pages and from JURA's instructions for the X10c; we have not added anything JURA does not state.

Every day: two to five minutes

  • Empty the grounds container and the drip tray while the machine is switched on. JURA's manual is explicit: if you empty the grounds container with the machine off, the grounds counter is not reset. Rinse both with hot water; on the X10c, the insert, drip tray and grounds container are dishwasher-safe.
  • Top up the water tank with fresh, cold water, unless the machine is plumbed in.
  • Clean the milk system every day you have made milk drinks. JURA calls this obligatory in the X10c manual and puts the time at about two minutes on the W8 and GIGA W10 pages. It is a one-touch program with the milk cleaning container and JURA milk system cleaner mini tabs; JURA asks you to use only its own milk system cleaner.

Every week

  • Rinse and clean the water tank, including the inner walls, with a brush.
  • Take the milk system in the outlet apart and rinse the parts, about once a week (X10c manual).
  • Clean the cup platform and wipe the outside of the machine with a soft, damp, clean cloth.

Every three months

JURA's X10c manual asks you to replace the HP3 milk pipe and the CX2 interchangeable milk spout every three months. Other models use other spouts (CX3 on the W8 and GIGA W10), so check the manual of your machine for the interval and the part.

When the machine asks: the cleaning program

The display tells you when the integrated cleaning program is due. On the X10c, JURA sets it after 180 preparations or 80 switch-on rinses. The program takes about 20 minutes and should not be interrupted:

  • Empty the drip tray and the grounds container and put them back.
  • Start the program from the display and follow the prompts.
  • When the machine asks for it, drop one JURA cleaning tablet into the funnel and close the lid.
  • Let the program finish, then empty the grounds container again.

JURA asks for its own cleaning tablets only, because they are made to work with the cleaning program. The 3-phase JURA cleaning tablets are in our shop.

CLARIS filter and descaling

Every JURA professional machine we sell comes with a CLARIS Pro Smart+ filter cartridge. The machine signals when the cartridge is exhausted; when that happens depends on the water hardness you set. On the X10c, JURA states that while a CLARIS Pro Smart+ cartridge is in use, no descaling request appears. Use the filter and you avoid descaling; stop using it and the machine will ask to be descaled.

Replacement cartridges: the CLARIS Pro Smart+, and the larger CLARIS Pro Smart maxi that JURA lists for several X and GIGA models, including the X4, X4c, X10, GIGA X3 and GIGA X8. Check your model's page or manual before you order the maxi.

If you do need to descale, JURA asks for its own descaling tablets only, which it says remove scale gently and extend the life of the machine: JURA descaling tablets.

Common messages and what to do

Message on the display What it means What to do
Empty grounds container / empty drip tray One of them is full; no preparation is possible. Empty both, with the machine switched on.
Drip tray missing The drip tray is not in place. Slide it back in properly.
Fill bean container The bean container is empty. Hot water and milk still work. Refill the beans.
Water tank not inserted The tank is not fully in place. Push it in correctly.
Check water supply (plumbed-in machines) The strainer of the fixed connection may be blocked, the stop valve closed, or the float in the tank stuck. Clean the strainer, open the valve, check the tank.
Machine too hot The system is too hot to start a maintenance program. Wait a few minutes, or make a coffee or hot water first.
Filter The CLARIS cartridge is exhausted. Replace the cartridge.
Cleaning, descaling or milk system cleaning That maintenance program is due. Run it from the display.

The exact wording on the display differs by model and language; the meaning is the same.

Error codes: Error 2, Error 5, Error 8 and others

JURA's X10c manual lists two error codes that you can solve yourself: ERROR 2 and ERROR 5. Both can appear after the machine has been exposed to cold for a long time, when the heating is locked for safety. Let the machine warm up to room temperature and switch it on again.

For every other ERROR message, JURA's instruction is to contact customer service. That includes Error 8, a code many people search for: it is not listed in the X10c manual, so we will not guess at its cause here. Switch the machine off, note the code and the model, and contact the dealer that supplied it. If your machine came from OR Coffee, contact us.

Supplies at a glance

Which JURA do you have?

Our reviews explain the daily routine per model, including how often the grounds container fills at full output: W4, W8, X4 and X4c, X10 and X10c, GIGA X3 and X3c, GIGA X8 and X8c and GIGA W10. For a side-by-side view, see our comparison of the JURA W, X and GIGA series.

How we wrote this guide

The care steps, intervals and messages come from JURA's instructions for use of the X10c and from JURA's official European product pages for the W4, W8, X4, X4c, X10, X10c, GIGA X3, GIGA X3c, GIGA X8, GIGA X8c and GIGA W10, checked on 22 October 2026. Intervals can differ per model; your machine's manual takes precedence.
