The story of Rwanda Ngera begins with a serendipitous email in 2016. Abdoul’s nephew, based in the Netherlands, reached out to us, eager to share the incredible coffee his uncle was producing in Rwanda. While we typically source directly from farmers, his enthusiasm piqued our interest, and we agreed to try some samples.

When the coffee arrived, we roasted and cupped it without any particular expectations. To our surprise, it was exceptional. We reached out to Abdoul’s nephew to learn more and expressed interest in meeting Abdoul during our next visit to Rwanda. But Abdoul had other plans—before we could make the trip, he decided to fly to Belgium to introduce himself personally!

This unexpected meeting left a lasting impression. We learned about Abdoul’s passion for coffee and the challenges he faced. At the time, he was selling his coffee through a trader but struggled to cover the debts from his washing station investment due to low coffee prices. Determined to build direct relationships with roasters, Abdoul saw an opportunity with us to turn things around.

A few months later, we visited Abdoul in Rwanda to see his practices firsthand. His commitment to quality and the meticulous care at his washing station convinced us that this partnership had great potential. Since then, we’ve worked together every year, sourcing coffee from the Huye District, where Abdoul collaborates with local producers who deliver their cherries to his station.

Today, Rwanda Ngera stands as a testament to Abdoul’s resilience and dedication, as well as the rich coffee heritage of the region. By choosing this coffee, you’re supporting a farmer who transformed challenges into opportunities, delivering a truly remarkable cup.

Huye, in Rwanda’s Southern Province, is celebrated for its high-altitude coffee farms, fertile volcanic soil, and ideal climate conditions. These elements come together to produce coffees with unique flavor profiles, characterized by sweetness and bright acidity. The region’s proximity to the bustling town of Butare adds accessibility while retaining its strong connection to traditional farming practices.

Farmers in Huye emphasize quality and sustainability, ensuring the cherries brought to Abdoul’s washing station meet the highest standards. This attention to detail ensures Rwanda Ngera’s consistent flavor and velvety mouthfeel.

3. Roasting process

Rwanda Ngera is a stable and versatile fully washed coffee that shines as a classic filter roast. With a total roast time of around 8 minutes, the focus lies on a short development phase to highlight its inherent sweetness, dried fruit notes, and sugary aftertaste. This light roast approach preserves its vibrant fig and licorice tones, resulting in a clean, sweet, and harmonious cup.
